Kathy Shuman forwards Christmas greetings from our Kenya Missionary
Dear Friends,
We had a wonderful but atypical year:
First, we had the post-election violence in Kenya, which didn’t allow us to celebrate the New Year Service on January 1st, 2008 and the Service on the Sunday after. We were “in prison” in our own house in Nairobi.
Then we were sent to Brazil in February because we were not able to do our pastoral work in Nairobi. There we had many opportunities to share God’s blessings and the challenges we were facing in the mission. – And, sure, we met our children, relatives and friends.
In March we went back to Nairobi. We receive the visit of many volunteer groups and other friends during the first semester. It is always a good experience to receive them and to work with them.
In July was the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya. It was a blessing to be there at the Matongo Seminar for the celebration with the Mission Partners of the ELCK.
In August we went to Brazil to do presentations in several congregations about God’s work in Kenya. We were blessed as we meet so many friends! And we received good financial support for our second term in Kenya; THANK YOU!
While we were in Brazil, some very important family events happened there: Our second grandson Henrique was born on August 23rd, to our daughter Tatiana and Dickson. I had the blessing to baptize him on September 7th. - Our youngest son Paulo married Flávia Roveda Severgnini on September 13th. – And our oldest son Léo married Ana Carolina Boelter on October 4th in Germany, where they are now living. – Many family blessings!!!! God be thanks!
In October we came to the USA, where we are visiting several congregations, speaking about the work in Kenya and looking for funds for our second term of two years in Nairobi. THANK YOU for the financial support! You are welcome to help us during the next two years; send your offerings to

We are now in Texas, with our good friends Norv and Carolyn Skov, where we will spend Christmas. We have had a wonderful time with them!!!
We are missing our good people in Kenya. We are anxious to go back there at the very end of January.
THANK YOU all for your friendship and Christian love. THANK YOU all who hosted us during this time!

We wish you a BLESSED CHRISTMAS and a BLESSED NEW YEAR with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Kathy Shuman reports the following:
St. Jude’s Ranch for children is now again accepting used, any-occasion greeting cards from November 15, 2008 thru February 28, 2009.
CLLC has a box in the west wing and we will be mailing our donations to: St. Jude's Ranch for Children, Card Recycling Program, 100 St. Jude's Street, Boulder City, NV 89005 JUST FRONTS PLEASE
Over thirty years ago, wishing to show their donors appreciation for making St. Jude’s Ranch for Children possible, the idea was conceived for turning the previous year’s Christmas cards into "new" cards for the coming season. The recipients were so delighted with their unique "thank you," they requested the children sell them the special cards. And so, the St. Jude’s Ranch Recycled Card Program was born.
Since then, the Program expanded to include all occasion greeting cards…just about anything that starts with a used greeting card front. People from all over the world have sent us their used card fronts!
The children participate in making the new recycled cards by removing the front and attaching a new back made with recycled paper. The new card is a beautiful, “green” card made by the children and volunteers. The benefits are two-fold: customers receive "green" holiday cards for use and the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and importance of "going green".
Go to their website if you would like to make a donation or purchase their cards J http://www.stjudesranch.org/help_card.php

From Pastors desk
Matt Land is the football coach at Trine University and is in the running for coach of the year for Division III. If he wins (and he is currently the leading vote getter) he has promised to donate his $50,000 reward to Project Help to enable them to complete their building. People can vote once every day until November 30th. It is easy to do (just click on www.coachoftheyear.com ), then select Division III. Matt Land's name is first on the list. This is a great way to help out a local charity. Pastor Mark

As reported by Judy Novak and forwarded by Kathy Shuman
Gary is finally out of surgery here in Indy at Methodist Hospital after 8 hours. The ablation procedure itself at this point appears to have gone well. They had the same problem as last time (his heart is very tough and they had a hard time getting into the left side with the cath) but at least this time they were prepared for it and went into the heart and not behind it.
His heart rate is always very slow (45-50) but it got down to 37 and they had to give him an adrenaline shot to speed it up so hopefully that won't cause a problem later. The doctor said he could go off the Amiodorone (to keep in rhythm) medicine he has been taking so that is good news. He will continue the coumadin for now with hopes of discontinuing in 2-4 months.
We continue to pray for a complete recovery.

Laura Boyer reports
Dear Friends,
Finally a diagnosis for Roger Schall.
Thank you all for your prayers for my dear son-in-law! It will be a long haul. Roger has diffuse large B cell lymphoma in stage 3 ~ according to doctors at the James Cancer Center/Ohio State University, Columbus ~ where his treatment is scheduled to begin Nov. 14 (if, by then, his biopsy wounds are healed and heart is okay, etc.) ~ there is a 60% cure ratio and a 40% respond ratio for their patients with this disease. Of the 40% who only respond, half have been cured with bone marrow transplants. He will be having chemo treatments through March and know it will be a battle but both he and Nancy have wonderful attitudes and with everyone's prayers, healing is the hope. Please keep the prayers going....we are so grateful for you and your prayers! Love, Laura Boyer

Note from Kathy Shuman
A note from Pastor Winterle (please remember that English is not his first language)
Hi,
I prepared a brief report about what happened, as follow:
" Last Sunday, during the second service at Bethany,Parma, I felt a pain on my left leg. I began to take some medicament that my orthopedist in Brazil gave to me to take in case of pain. And that medicament had an bad effect upon my blood pressure. But I felt it only yesterday morning. The blood pressure was 203/ 98. They taught it was a stroke, because my left leg (more on the feet) was numb and tingling. So also my tong and around the mouth. I had a MRI of the brain with and without contrast, and was "nothing in my brain" .... But 'the lumbar spine MRI was most significant for an L4-L5 disk herniation causing L5 nerve root compression'. Electrocardiogram was normal and so also the other tests. I was admitted at the hospital yesterday morning, and came back to Dr.Rutt's home this afternoon. The blood pressure is now normal and I have some medicament to take because my spine and my left leg.
I couldn't go to Clear Lake Luth. Church this morning, but I send a DVD with my presentation and they showed it at the Bible Class. I will not go to the Pastoral Conference in Indianapolis tomorrow to Wednesday, but I will rest at Dr.Rutt's home. The Doctor allows us to go to Springfield, MO, on Thursday. "
We will be in touch about a possibility to visit with you during this week. Dr.Rutt says that you are living near from Fort Wayne.

From Laura Boyer
Please put my son-in-law, Roger Schall, on your prayer chain....having biopsy surgery this afternoon at 2 PM at Defiance, Ohio. They live at Lake Pleasant near summer cottage and Nancy teaches in Napoleon, Ohio; their Ohio home is in rural Ayersville, Ohio. Doctors have been putting him thru many tests and nothing seems to exactly fit but they are quite sure he has lymphoma. Feeling amazingly well but still constant pain and a mass very low and deep in the abdomen/groin area and other spots too ~ they really do not want to cut, so they are going in to find nodes that they feel are 'hot' for more definite proof before they begin treatment. Have been trying to find a surgeon to do a needle biopsy but nowhere can he be taken care of before another month goes by....hard to believe but that is the way it is....prayer is all we have.
Roger and Nancy are definitely the Lord's servants so He is in charge. Please help us pray.
In Christ's Love, Laura

Would you like to meet our missionary Rev. Carlos Winterle and his wife Lidia? We will be hosting them this weekend. We plan on going to Mulligan’s for dinner Saturday night? We will then come back to our home for dessert. We would love to have you join us. If you would like to join us, please call (260-833-6170) or email me (bkshuman@mchsi.com) so we have a large enough table…. On Sunday he will be part of the service and the education hour. There will be refreshments. J
They also will be joining small group at Bob Burris’s home on Sunday night beginning a 5:30- 6:00 for a cookout and Bible study. Bob’s email is bandaburris@dklb.net
Rev. Carlos and Lidia Winterle serve as Ablaze! Alliance Missionaries in Nairobi, Kenya, through a partnership between the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB), The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya, and LCMS World Mission. Carlos, former president of the IELB, serves the English-speaking congregation of Uhuru Highway Lutheran Church in Nairobi. Carlos and Lidia's ministry has many facets, including Kenya lay leader training, an orphan feeing program, prison ministry, youth ministry, outreach to university students, and working with mothers who have HIV/AIDS. Carlos served as a missionary and pastor in Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre until 1998. From 1998 to 2006, he served as the president of the IELB. Carlos also previously taught as a professor at Concordia Seminary in Porto Alegre.
Please pray for the Winterles as they serve in Nairobi. Pray that they would find people to partner with them in their work with prayer and financial support, for the children and youth of their congregation, who are especially vulnerable, for safe travels to and from Kenya, and for their family in Brazil. Thank the Lord for this opportunity He has given the Winterles to serve cross-culturally in Kenya, for the friends He has provided them in Kenya, and for the support of the church in Brazil and the United States.
