Subject: Responding to the Devastation in Louisiana from Hurricanes Gustav & Ike

Hi...I'm Scott McBride, a long-time boomeranger with Project REHAB. I just returned a few days ago from my last trip to the Gulf which included a visit with Bart Tucker to Chauvin, LA where the eye of Gustav hit the Gulf Coast. Today, Bart called to say that the destruction from Ike this past weekend was even more damaging than Gustav because a nearby levee broke sending flood waters rushing into homes and other buildings in Chauvin. Since Chauvin is a small town (less than 10,000) southwest of New Orleans it does not get the volunteer help that the larger cities get.

So over the past few days Bart has been working with our Biloxi partner volunteer group, Hopeforce, to provide urgent, first response services to Chauvin. Today, Bart will lead a team of 39 Americorps youth plus Dave Boulter and Heather Westcott in 13 vehicles loaded with tools and supplies to help Chauvin recover from the slamming damages of two hurricanes in less than 2 weeks.

The most pressing need right now is volunteers to tarp damaged roofs to prevent further flooding; repair the most seriously damaged roofs; and to muck out houses devasated by flood waters.

So we need all the volunteer help we can get. If there is any way you can come alone or with a team of volunteers, now is the time you can make a critical difference in the Chauvin recovery. Also, Bart asks that if you are planning to come later this month to participate in the blitz build of Bruce Marson's house in Biloxi, would you consider coming sooner and start your work in Chauvin. Anything we

can do in the next two weeks to prevent further damage in Chauvin will dramatically speed up the longer term recovery of this community.

Chauvin is 57 miles (about 1-1/2 hr drive) southwest of the New Orleans airport or about 150 miles (about 2-1/2 hr drive) southwest of Biloxi, MS. We have arranged volunteer housing in Chauvin and have lots of tools and materials though additional large tarps, generators, etc. are always helpful.

If you can volunteer any time in the next few weeks, please contact Bart at BartowT@aol.com.

We also can use donations to help pay for all the materials we are buying for this recovery. Please mail your donations, made payable to "Project REHAB" to Project REHAB P.O. Box 8940 Biloxi MS 39535

Thanks for your prayers and continued personal support of the Gulf Coast recovery.

August 16, 2008

Kathy & Bill,

We made it here safely - the only mishap was a flat tire - before we left the rental truck parking lot!  If you are going to have a flat tire, this is the place for it!   We had a great time following Route 66 and taking in those sights and seeing the Grand Canyon.  Otherwise there were more days of desert to cross than we cared for!  Driving the truck was pretty stressful for Mark, then we arrived just in time for VBS.  By the Friday of VBS Mark was coming down with a good cold.  He took off a couple days this week to recuperate and is feeling much better today.

We haven't purposely been ignoring everyone back in Indiana, we have had a hard time getting the internet connected and just now (15 minutes ago) got it up and running!  I feel like I have been so out of touch with the world, unable to apply for jobs (although I have been keeping busy without being able to do this...).  So I am now back in touch with the world.  Yeah!

Mark's e-mail (
vicar@faithvista.org) is right now coming to our own e-mail, but we are setting up another account so our e-mail is not work e-mail. So the mdsmith2083@msn.com will be our home e-mail, and vicar@faithvista.org will be Mark's work e-mail.

Congratulations on the upcoming grandparenthood!  Being a grandparent is even better than being a parent.  So much fun in store for you.

Tell everyone hi and that we made it here safely.  I appreciate your e-mail and am glad we are finally back on line!

Also, my sister came through her surgery fine, but the cancer was more extensive than they had thought.  They were hoping she wouldn't need chemo, but it looks like she will.  But she seems to be doing fine and is still planning on a trip to LA in September - with the Dr's approval last I heard.

Love,

Darlene

Dr. Paul Maier

CLEAR LAKE---Clear Lake Lutheran Church is celebrating its 70th anniversary tonight and Sunday.

Paul Maier, an author and second vice president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, will preach at 5:30 p.m. tonight and again Sunday at 9 a.m.

Maier has written two historical documentaries: “Pontius Pilate” and “Flames of Rome.” He also has published a theological thriller, “A Skeleton in God’s Closet.” A sequel, “More Than A Skeleton,” appeared in 2003. More than 500 million Maier books are in print in 15 languages.

During the services, special music will be provided by soloist Keith Tonne with his son, John Tonne, on bass and Carol Degitz on the marimba.

Following the Sunday morning service, a brunch will be held in the church’s fellowship hall. A PowerPoint presentation on the history of the church will be shown and attendees will receive a booklet and commemorative mug.

Clear Lake Lutheran Church was founded in 1938 when a number of families who had cottages on the lake asked founding pastor, the Rev. Gustave Polack, to lead services for them. The church was built in less than two months in 1939 by volunteers from the Fort Wayne area. For many years, the Rev. Armin Oldsen, former speaker of the Lutheran Hour, served as pastor and attracted worshippers from through a large area.

Pastor Mark Gaertner is currently the pastor. He sends an invitation for the weekend’s festivities to anyone who has been part of the history of the church. Those staying for brunch Sunday are asked to make reservations by calling the church at 260-495-9219.

Terry Hague reports the following:

Hi - I have 6 seats on the 40 yard line, about 2/3 of the way up across from the press box at Purdue for the upcoming season.  I obviously am not going to be able to use all, and need some help.  Sorry, these are not gifts!  Conference games are $56 and non-conference $50 because these are "prime seats" - I just talked to the ticket office to confirm individual price.  If you get all 6, you can have the Lot L (Grand Prix track) parking pass as a bonus!  Here is the schedule, and as far as I am concerned it is first come first served.  I even work several so definitely cannot go.  Appreciate your help utilizing my tickets - hate to see an empty seat and it should be a good season!  Contact Terri Hague at:   tghb215@verizon.net

Terri Hague reports the following Update on Tanner Surfus published 6-11-2008

Thank you all for your prayers for Tanner Surfus.  I saw him on Saturday at his sister's graduation party.  He looks different without his dark brown hair, eyebrows & long eyelashes!  He was in good spirits and having a fun time.  He went in the hospital yesterday for his final (hopefully) chemo treatment.  He will be sick this week & next from the chemo.

I had informed you in a previous e-mail that Lindsay, his step-sister, was pregnant.  Unfortunately, she had a miscarriage at 3 months.  Lindsay and Brad, her husband, have a strong faith but I would appreciate it if you would also pray for them in their loss.

Please continue to pray for Tanner and forward to your church & prayer chains.  Please keep Paul, Karen and all of Tanner's family in your prayers.

Thank you, Elaine

Just a gentle reminder from Kathy Shuman

As part of CLLC’s VBS 2008 FRIENDSHIP TREK, we want to share God’s blessings through our Sudan Kid to Kid Pack Mission Project (Connecting kids to Lutheran children in Sudan, Africa).

Pat Nuffer will be visiting CLLC to explain the mission project on Sunday, May 18, during the worship service at 9:00 a.m.

Please plan on joining us to hear all about this Mission Project.

Hear her fascinating story.

See her pictures that tug at your heart.

Attend the reception and information session during the Education hour, following the service.

CLLC 2008 VBS will be providing refreshments during the Education hour in the fellowship area downstairs.

EVERYONE IS INVITED!

PLEASE PLAN ON JOINING US

Deaconess Pat Nuffer (Fort Wayne) has asked for our help.  Her calling is her Hands of Mercy Mission.  Each year she supports a training Center for People with Disabilities in the Sudan through the Lutheran Church of Sudan. She spends three weeks in the Sudan at the mission. As you know, Christian educational activities help children develop in mind and body and spirit; they learn about Jesus and His love for them.  Mission projects give us another chance to respond to God’s love by sharing the gifts He gives us.

Pat suggests we provide Kid to Kid to Packs that she would take with her in July, 2008 to be given to Sudan children.

CLLC VBS is asking for donations of money (Checks may be made out to CLLC, mark it the 2008 VBS Sudan Project) and/or donations of items.  Check out the display in the west wing of CLLC for more information.

Any questions, don’t hesitate to ask Kathy Shuman who may have an answer J  (bkshuman@mchsi.com or 260-833-6170)

Kathy Shuman reports The last of the VBS packages arrived in Kenya.  Kathy had delayed sending them do to the unrest on Kenya.  She is glad they arrived safely.  Pastor Winterle is very appreciative T

Hi, Kathy

The boxes arrived today!!! THANK YOU!!! (in capital letters!!!)

Very nice material to work with the children. They will be happy to have this, and the teachers too.

The set with the Bible stories, memory cards, etc., is very helpful too. The children can say memory verses to the congregation before they go to the Sunday School Class after the sermon. They like to take the microphone and say a Bible verse or sing.

We are well in Kenya. It is going to the normality. Lot of displaced people are going from the camps to their home this week - some Lutheran too. I hope they will have peace in their land. Some of them are little farmers; I visited one of these families.

Lidia and I are beginning to prepare our furlough. Around August 11th we are going to Brazil; our youngest son Paulo will marriage in September, and our daughter Tatiana is expecting a baby for end of August. After this, we are planning to go to the USA to do Fund Raising in October - December to stay two more years in Kenya, God willing.

Say THANK YOU for your congregation and all people who help you to send us this two packages. It will be a blessing for the children.

Note from Kathy to  P.Carlos Winterle

One is filled with Lily wreath crafts.

The other contains;

            Magic cross scratch crafts

Butterfly using pencil craft with foam sheets, decorations, chenille stems, etc.  Be sure to look for the demonstration packet and the shape outlines.

Hopefully you can use them for the children or whatever.

I continue to pray for your safety as well as progress spreading the Gospel message.

It may be sometime before you receive them.

We are supporting a Sudan mission project this VBS year.  Africa seems to weigh heavily on my heart.

Hugs,

Kathy Shuman

Terri Hague tells us:

. . . . my relationship to Tanner - Elaine is a good friend of mine, and she has asked me, and I in turn you, to keep Tanner in our thoughts.  No child should have to deal with diseases of this magnitude but it happens frequently.  Maybe one extra prayer will sway God to help Tanner through this and spare other children.  This seems like "sins of the father (grandfather, great-grandfather, etc) being passed on to the child" for them to suffer.

Previous updates:

Thank you all for keeping Tanner in your prayers.  Tanner is doing pretty well. The week end after chemo he was not feeling good at all but is doing better now. He goes back in April 8 to start another round of chemo and his parents decided no to have him do the radiation.  I have included a message his mom sent to me.

Please continue to pray for Tanner and his family as he starts another round of chemo this next week.

God Bless you and your family,Elaine

Hi,
Thought that I would send you an e-mail update.  Tanner did better with his second round of chemo-he goes in to Lutheran on Tuesday morning and stays until some time Friday. We go again April 8-next week. Then he doesn't feel good during that week-end, better by Monday but then he needs to stay home as his white blood cell count is low. He has it checked and when he is able he goes back to school. He lost his hair but is getting used to that 'look'. Also, we found out that he will not be doing radiation. Paul and I were not feeling good about the side effects for children after talking to the radiologist in Fort Wayne so we did go to IU cancer center in Indy and met with one there. Still we were not sure if it was the right choice for us. Ended up that a pediatric radiologist decided that Tanner has enough toxins in him and would not recommend doing the radiation now. We are going to do the chemo and then he will have scans periodically and if anything shows up we could biopsy- and if need b
